Although not an easy two years and although mother was not very communicative I am sure the individual attention and cheerfulness of all those who helped her maintained the best possible quality of life.

Chickens return to rule the roost!

Resident Irene Hibberd is the Head of Chickens at Barty House Nursing Home, Kent!
Last year Barty House residents watched, amazed, as the chicks hatched in a special incubator at the home. Chicks were then fostered by staff member Donna Williams. The chicks - all now very much fully grown, have returned triumpantly to live permanently at Barty House.

Their new Barty 'Mum', Irene, otherwise known as “the bird lady”, feeds all of the chickens twice a day without fail.

Knock knock - Is Irene there please?

The chickens are let out to roam in the garden in the morning to dig for worms and roam free and then at the same time everyday Irene puts them to bed. They are trained to go back to their coop where they are fed. Before dark they walk up their ladder to return to the safety of the roosting box where they are warm and cosy until the next morning.

The chickens are so tame that they greet and climb up to the delighted Irene. They are happy to be handled and are proving to be friendly and extremely content pets!
